Cisco Unified Presence 8 installation on VMware and initialization with CUCM 8 (Pt1)

Cisco unified presence is not a new thing anymore. i test this product way back in 2007. It was not that attractive in those days. But still i manage to kick out a OCS POC out of one of my customers. Yes fulfilling indeed.

Installation of CUPS 8 is quite simple. You just have to create a virtual machine on vmware with Guest operating system type as  Red Hat Linux 4.0 (32 bit), 1024 MB of memory and 100 GB hard disk. Boot from the ISO file and proceed with the setup. its not tricky at all.

From the CUCM point you will have to add this presence server as a application server under system –> Application Server. Click Add new server and  select Cisco Unified presence. And you will notice this menu is not like CUCM 7 GUI. it has more application server type’s. (I wish i ll have time to test all of this). Most impressive application server type for me is “Cisco web Dialer Server”. There is a history behind that my close buddies know the reason and im not gonna explain it here. 😀

Anyway back to the topic. Once you select the server type it will ask for the name. You can specify the server name that you gave at the installation face. Then it is asking for the URL. that is nothing but the https://<IPADDRESS OF CUPS SERVER>/. You don’t have to fill out the  End User URL.

According Cisco best practices Next you need to create user group in CUCM that has privilege of “AXL API Access”.You can do it by clicking on

User Management –> User Group and click on add new.

Just specify the name in my case “CUPS_AXL_GROUP”. Click save. Then in the related links select “Assign Role to User Group”. Then click “Assign role to group” button and search for the “Standard AXL API Access” select it and click on the add selected button. And click on save one more time. Now you have a user group just for the CUPS AXL related requirements.

Now create an Application user by

User Management –> Application User -> Add New.

Just Specify a Name  password and more importantly add this application user to the user group that you created in the previous exercise by clicking “Add to user group” and then search for the user group that you created in the last step.

Once you are done with the installation. When you are logging to the CUPS for the first time it will carry you through a wizard. And it will ask some questions about CUCM 8.It will ask for the following.

1. CUCM host name

2. CUCM IP address

3. CUCM cluster security password.

Then at the next screen it will ask for the AXL capable user details that you created in the CUCM.

That’s it initialization is done. I wish i could cover the services part. But unfortunately CUPS 8 is not a easy going when its come to services. It has lot of new services when you compare it with the previous versions. That is 2moro. Good night people Happy surfing out there.
